Anthurium Flowers - Not Flowers in the First Place
The actual Anthurium flowers are really small that they are rarely seen without the use of a magnifying glass. The part of the plant that is referred to as a flower is really the spathe. The spathe is the section of the plant that is more of a cross between a flower petal and a leaf, at any rate in appearance. The flower's name comes from the Greek in which "anthos" means flower and the another word "oura", means the tail. Simply put it could properly be named flowers with a tail.

The spathe in the Anthurium flowers is often bright red; nonetheless it can be other colors such as orange, white, pink, green, or peach. Those bright colors are what make the viewers consider it a flower. This varied colored spathe surrounds an inflorescence, which is called a spadix or stalk. In this particular spadix is where the actual Anthurium flowers can be found. If you look at them through a magnifying glass they'll look like little bumps. When they start to bloom they will appear as fuzzy bumps in the spadix.

The Anthurium flowers are a tropical vegetation. There are several different types of these flowers. One particular variety is very large and grows very bright and showy. They may be so large that the spathe is almost a foot wide and the flower stalks more than a foot long. But on the other end of the spectrum is the plant which reaches just about 5 or 6 inches tall. These have a spathe which reaches just about an inch wide.

A lot of different types of Anthurium flowers grow straight and upright. And they bear single leaves that tend to develop at the very tip of stalks that are very long. However, there are some varieties that appear to be more like a bush. And other varieties are trailing plants. This type of plant works effectively in a hanging basket. The flowers also bloom for very long time frames. They can be cut and put in a vase of water and remain looking very healthy and vibrant around 6 weeks.

This specific tropical plant makes a wonderful house plant yet cannot endure outdoor planting in areas where environment does not cooperate. Actually most of the regions in the United States will have to keep these solely as house plants. But they will survive nicely in tropical areas such as Hawaii, South America and the Caribbean. Anthurium flowers are quite easy to take care of, as the main concern is merely their water supply.
